Position Overview
The Nursing Director – Labor and Delivery is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and managing resources for one or two departments on a 24-hour basis. The Director oversees daily operations, staffing, budgeting, resource utilization, quality outcomes, performance improvement, regulatory compliance, and patient care services.
This position provides leadership and direction to nursing staff while working collaboratively with medical staff, hospital leadership, and system departments to ensure efficient, high-quality, and patient-centered care.
Key Responsibilities
General Management:
- Establish goals and objectives aligned with the strategic plans of the facility and Baptist Health System.
- Develop and manage annual department operating and capital budgets.
- Direct daily operations of assigned department(s).
- Manage staff performance and ensure effective resource utilization.
- Maintain compliance with regulatory and organizational requirements.
- Identify and address operational risks and challenges.
- Maintain effective relationships with staff, managers, physicians, and internal and external customers.
- Support hospital policies, procedures, and strategic initiatives.
Personnel Management & Development:
- Recruit, select, and promote qualified personnel.
- Direct, support, and coach direct reports.
- Manage employee performance, competency, and development.
- Address employee concerns and support retention initiatives.
- Identify and develop staff expertise and leadership capabilities.
- Assess learning needs and establish competency and development plans.
- Provide feedback and support professional growth.
Department & Business Unit Management:
- Collaborate with medical staff and healthcare teams to support positive patient outcomes.
- Utilize data and statistical analysis to guide operational decisions and improve performance.
- Redesign workflows and processes to improve customer satisfaction, quality, efficiency, and cost effectiveness.
- Identify high-risk situations and utilize root cause analysis to reduce or eliminate risks.
- Support case management and clinical improvement initiatives.
- Monitor and communicate quality and performance outcomes.
- Ensure department and staff readiness to provide safe and effective patient care.
- Maintain a safe environment and address patient population-specific needs.
- Ensure efficient and effective utilization of departmental resources.
- Support Performance Improvement activities and organizational quality initiatives.
Quality & Performance Improvement:
- Lead department-level performance improvement initiatives.
- Monitor quality metrics and implement corrective actions when needed.
- Promote service excellence and patient-centered care.
- Participate in Performance Management programs and leadership development initiatives.
- Support continuous improvement across assigned departments.
Qualifications
Minimum Education:
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN) required.
Preferred Education:
- Master's Degree in Nursing, Business, or a related field preferred.
Minimum Experience:
- Minimum 5 years of experience in nursing or the applicable specialty.
Preferred Experience:
- 3–5 years of progressively responsible nursing management experience preferred.
- Previous Labor and Delivery leadership/management experience strongly preferred.
Required Licensure:
- Current and active Texas State Registered Nurse (RN) License required.
Required Certifications:
- Active healthcare provider BLS certification from ARC or AHA at the time of hire.
- Candidates without AHA Healthcare Provider BLS must obtain it within 60 days of hire.
Compensation: $96,000.00 - $120,000.00 per year
